All Together

Our architecture — and our firm — are uniquely welcoming. Our designs take shape around real life, and deliver both refined function and undeniable style. From the collaborative way we create, to the inspiration we find in the world at large, the name says it all:

Let’s design En Masse.

Group of 12 people smiling and posing for a photo in a modern indoor space with framed pictures and a large plant on the wall.

Our work spans heirloom-quality residences, design-forward commercial and hospitality spaces, and curated interiors. Translating our clients’ vision into inspired surroundings — from the inside out and from form to finishes — we create spaces that are tailored, expressive, and built to last. Our award-winning work brings warmth and thoughtful design to modern new construction and a fresh perspective to historic renovations.

Design

Two men sitting at a table, one with a beard and the other holding a black dog. They are smiling and looking at each other in a room with framed pictures on the wall and a large potted plant in the corner.

We’re an eclectic group of architects and designers who are serious about fun because we love what we do. Collaboration with our clients, designers, contractor teams, artists, and craftsmen bring our designs to life. By building an ethos around each project and amplifying the strength of every individual, we navigate the complexities of design and construction.
With clarity and confidence, En Masse celebrates the joy of creating great work together.

Process

A man and woman engaged in a conversation, sitting at a wooden table in a modern office or conference room, with papers, a rolled-up blueprint, and drinks on the table.

Partners Mike Shively and Lucas Goldbach lead our design studios in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. Tucked into a row of vintage greystones, our Logan Square studio is in ongoing conversation with its historic neighborhood and the creative community that surrounds it. We organize public events, spotlight local organizations, and take an active role in civic and professional design circles. Design is rooted in place, and we’re proud to contribute to the community that shape us.

“Architecture is our imagined future, it holds us in the present and is the truest record of how we lived.”

For Mike, En Masse represents the culmination of a lifelong passion for architecture. After founding Mike Shively Architecture in 2015, he began to refine the whole-team approach to architecture which led to the transition to En Masse in 2020. Empowered, whole-team creativity informs Mike’s leadership and is synonymous with his approach to En Masse’s clients and projects: listening and collaborating come first, leading to design that brings joy to daily life.

Mike likes to think of En Masse as it relates to another passion of his: the band Phish. Both expressions involve collaboration and creative improvisation resulting in intricately layered results.

“Creativity is the biggest part of myself and it leads the way that I approach each new day- actively seeking inspiration.”

En Masse represents the art in architecture, and a creative practice fueled by collaboration and a healthy sense of humor and sensibility. Injecting art and artisanship into every facet of the firm’s work, from signature hand-drawn renderings to bespoke finishing details, he leads the direction of architectural interiors and interior design with expertise and care.

As a creative leader, he consistently challenges himself and the En Masse team to reach for the idea, the detail, the solution that not only understands the style and essence of a building, but how to break the rules in inspired fashion.
